The past 3 years a pod of Orcas that belong to a sub species of Orca with only around 50 members left in the wild that feed on bluefin tuna in and around the Straight of Gibraltar have been attacking sailing and fishing boats and showing increased never before seen aggression towards humans. This species of Orcas main source of food the Bluefin Tuna has been extremely overfished in the area and many scientists are theorizing that the starving Orcas have been fed or have learned that attacking boats might get them some fish thrown overboard. This theory isn't a widely supported one and no one really knows whats going on besides the fact that the attacks are happening with such increased frequency an no one really is offerring any valid answers for why this is happening.
This particular pod of Orcas can be seen in over a dozen videos on youtube harrassing and attacking sailing vessels near the Straights to the point where they have banned vessels that are too small from even sailing in the region. This is a key point I want to come back to but here are some of the numerous videos of some of the attacks and yes this is the same pod of whales doing all these attacks.
This is the crazy thing that I think Ive stumbled on from reading the youtube comments. People are theorizing about why the whales are doing this including scientists and theories range from them being fed and this being a learned behaviour because they are starving and associating humans with the lack of their main food source etc. The noise from the boats are disturbing them etc. One thing everyone agrees on is that the whales are starving due to tuna being overfished in the region which within the last 3 years has gotten to a very serious state. Thing about Orcas diets is they only eat what they were taught to eat by their elders. Diets and prey are passed down and taught from Mothers to their children etc so Orcas that eat Bluefin Tuna in a region only eat Bluefin Tuna etc and pass up other edible prey they werent taught to eat.
So the Orcas are and have been starving. One thing not really mentioned at all though is how many migrants cross the straights on little dingys and boats and go missing. One of the comments that I found mentioned that Gaurdia Civil in the area knows whats going on but hiding it and heavily hinting they feeding on the migrants that cross almost daily. If you actually read the Civil Guardia reports on missing people there people going missing everyday. I think these Orcas are eating migrants.
They already know how, or well a different sub species that preys on seals knows how to use teamwork to do just that. It wouldnt suprise me that hungry Orcas didnt adapt to feed on the little boats packed with food crossing through their territory daily.

from what Im reading they are attacking boats on sight now. They usually break off the rudder or cause significant damage to the rudder. From the videos you can see them looking at the people on the boat like they look at seals floating on ice. Its clearly aggressive behaviour and its to the point where they are banning certain vessals that are under a certain size from sailing in the area and its almost expected that you can run into them in the region. Pretty crazy stuff and the narrative is still that there are no recorded Orca attacks in the wild. Because the Orcas dont leave any evidence.
that is what people thought at first but the narrative is now they are coordinated attacks but they are baffled on why. They usually disable the ship by damaging the rudder enough the ships have to be towed back in or limp back to dock. No one is feeding them to match the coordination of attacks and they have strategies now to try and protect the rudder. They are a huge pain in region right now. They seem really pissed off.
