I will expand on this for you and say that it's also useful as a first-pass on any subject, if only in order to follow the references listed by the article.
It's also useful for practical things in which politics could not reasonably intrude, such as en.wikipedia.org

I agree. STEM articles are surprisingly well written, and I'm saying that as a person that double checks everything. Every time I double check the info with a textbook or articles from other websites (belonging to universities and so on) it's never so wrong as to make it useless. Just minor mistakes, maybe. Typos, a slightly wrong formula, missing info, etc. It's better than most other online and offline encyclopedias, except specialized ones. Specialized encyclopedias, databases, etc. Take for example:
