Göring was a popular hero of WW1, which made it a massive win to get him into the NSDAP early.
He was genuinely intelligent and ambitions. But he got fucked over by burocratic nonsense and weasels like Himmler, causing him to rest on his laurels and succumb to his vices of gluttony and sloth.
He did make a mockery out of the Nürnberg trials by constantly questioning the authority of the court and then becoming an hero instead of being executed publically
