Ukraine had been waging a low-grade civil war against ethnic russians for the last 8 years, including an incident when they locked a few hundred peaceful protestors in a building and burned them to death.
Further, the reason the Ukrainian military got cauldroned in the east is because they were staging to invade the Dunbass for further ethnic cleansing. Not to mention NATO's provocations.
Ukrainians are the baddies here, by a mile.
