It is that simple. Go to water and spot something 25 miles away. If the earth were round there would be a 40 storey wall of water blocking the bottom of your view. Zoom in on the waterline and then ask how.

For the earth to be the size they claim it curves down 8” per mile. One mile 8”, two miles 32”, three miles 72”, four miles 128”, etc. So a 6’ man standing on the waters edge can only see 3 miles before the bottom disappears. Objects 4 miles out would lose 4’ off the bottom being ‘behind’ water.
At 25 miles, standing on the waters edge, if you looked at a city, you would only see the top of buildings over 40 stories high. 415’ of water would block the bottom.
Try it and you can see the waterline clearly from 25 miles.
From a boat you are elevated 30’. Next time ypu come to port see how far away you begin seeing land. My guess is you see land at 40-50 miles out ... but that is not possible. Like Doveranon above, at 30 miles from a 30’ elevated boat height 350’ is hidden. You would only see the tips of skyscrapers at 30 miles. Bet you clearly see the waterline with nothing hidden at 50 miles.

thats not correct. you're calculating as if the observer is at zero height. To a 6 foot observer looking at something 25 miles away about 209 feet would be hidden.
