As I said previously, my experience was in 1968. I was tested at 4 years old to see if I could start school early and was allowed to. My mother says they told her that my IQ tested at 132 which was slightly below the requirement but they took me in anyway.
The first time I saw this discussion come up someone mentioned the "A is for Apple" poster covering up the window on the door and I flashed back to that. I remember putting our heads down on the desk and being told to visualize things. Then they would quiz us about something after but I have no specific memories about what unfortunately.
The main thing I recall is being frustrated because I didn't understand what they wanted from me, the questions were so vague. This was in California. Our family moved to the PNW when I was 7 and I was shocked at how far behind the education was there. I wasn't pulled out of normal classes ever again after moving to WA.

Depends. GATE can be seen as a filtering program for brainiacs. GATE was filtering for brainiacs without impenetrable freewill.
