We understand this but language evolves according to how people use it, and the whole world decided to call the citizens of the united states Americans. Language policing always fails. It must suck to be a prescriptivist because they've never won a single language war in all of human history. The only consolation prizes prescriptivists win are over extremely minor things like telling us to use Greek pluralization instead of English pluralization (phenomena vs phenomenons). But even those kinds of "victories" are extremely unstable.

The continent is called America because of Américo Vespucio an Italian explorer, the word Americas is an Anglo invention created many years later

South America and North America are two different continents. Central America is technically part of North America.
There is no other country with the word America in it, so it’s safe to assume America means the US.
