People like to bring up that Putin was former KGB, however He wasn't simply JUST an old KGB agent, he was director of the FSB which was the successor organization to the KGB, and he was director of the FSB at the time of two Jewish oligarchs Roman Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky made him prime minister to succeed Yeltsin. Yeltsin had become an incompetent drunk and an embarrassment to them so they needed a strong leader to come in and secure their interests and increase their wealth. And they had seen that Putin was loyal to those people whom he had attached himself to when he worked for the committee for external relations of the mayors office in St. Petersburg. He had a very corrupt tenure there, and when the mayor was charged with corruption Putin stood behind him. So the Jewish oligarchs felt that Putin would be a good successor to Yeltsin because they knew he would protect Yeltsin, they weren't so concerned that he would protect them, just they were concerned about Yelstin. And they way that they garnered popular support for this man who was tainted by his relations to the KGB and the FSB - (which are largely unpopular in Russia), was to instigate a war in Chechnya that would make him the leader of the Russian people and rally the support of the Russian people behind him. And berezovsky setup a scheme to have a couple of thousand troops invade Dagestan, then Putin would come in and nullify this uprising of Islamic terrorism and takeover Chechnya and appoint a new leadership in Chechnya that would be anti-west and favorable to Russia, whilst concurrently the KGB(it's really just the FSB, labels changed) to instigate bombings around Moscow and blew up apartment buildings in 1999. This was falseflag terrorism that scapegoated the Chechens.
