I believe the reason for the change is that people are no longer stationary, they have become nomadic and in so doing, a vital part of what makes the bond between stationary neighbors function is lost.
You see, when the door is open, you no longer have to abide by the same rules.
And what used to be quite friendly gestures, have now become a handicap ready to be exlpoited.

In a parasitic society, it is stupid to sell your car to a friend, even family member, or lend them money or even letting them stay at your house.
Chances are, if you sold your car to a friend, you probably made less money, if you bought a car from a friend, you probably payed over the initial price, if you rent at a friends house, you are probably expected to deal with pluming yourself.
Those who are under a parasitic mind will see everyone else as parasites, this is why americans see the very state itself as a parasite.

In fact they become proud of their parasitism, they see it as a higher goal, they see themselves as better than everyone else because they are able to fool other people to pay higher for things they bought for lower.

Socialism is the concern of societal problems.
They do not necessarily always have to mean taxes, but usually do.
The flag is a socialist program, the national anthem is a socialist program, the schools are a socialist program, architecture and city planning are a social program, the roads are a social program, the internet are a social program.
To keep it unregulated is a social conscious decision to do, it is a social program to keep the internet free for example, and keeping the internet free may require taxes to uphold as there are forces absolutely capable of making it less free that will build up over time if not kept in check.
