I just finished my first novella.
It's been an idea I've struggled with.
Three of my friends have self published their books and just sell on amazon and put them in local shops and coffee places to sell and they seems perfectly content with that.
I will probably do that too because why should I put myself under control and beg for the approval of some publisher.
However at the same time, Every author I have ever loved has gone that route and I feel like getting published the normal way would be validating.
That's just me thinking about things wrong though. Self publishing will be the way to go for sure.

Dude, you have no idea how bad it is. I am author and an artist, worked on my craft for 15+ years now, and still fervently dedicate myself to it. All you will see, however, are publishing houses only interested in works from racial or sexual minorities and, on the visual arts side, events and spotlights tailored towards the same thing.
The moment you proclaim yourself as straight while being a white man, especially if you don't have other connections to carry you, everyone in the modern creative industry recoils in disgust like they just witnessed a frog in a blender. Nothing, absolutely nothing, has made me more depressed and miserable than trying to get my foot in the door of the creative industry; everyone I spoke to and form connections with do it with relative ease, with the only common denominator is that they're often flying some flavor of LGBTwhatever flag while I do not.
The funny thing is that most of these people are actually straight, but are calling themselves "asexual" or just putting the flags and tags up because they know it opens the door for much greater marketing success with it. It's an elephant in the room no one wants to address, because the moment you do, its protectors will ruin your life - you either go along with it, or you accept the life of the underdog and the reality you will get nowhere.
The merits of your work do not matter if you do not represent someone's favorite team, leading to a warped perception that only these fag-flag or radical left type people can be creative. Your work gets rejected or put on a wait list for YEARS, while some milquetoast amateur tripe gets awards and praise just because the creator is some flavor of racial minority, sexual minority, has a vagina, or is all 3.
My struggles through the creative industry was an eye-opening experience to say the least. Is this what Hitler felt?
