A lab rat who doesn't even work with patients is telling us that his experience working with petri dishes gives him better insight into what's going on with COVID than normal people who live in the real world.

I don't know a single person who hasn't gotten COVID at this point. I also don't know a single person who has died from it or even gotten seriously ill. Of the hundreds of people I know, they have all gotten COVID and it was nothing more than a cold or mild case of the flu.

Alright, it's because the viral genome authors used an unpublished, well-conserved mammalian backbone that is well tolerated in a variety of species and did not evolve that way but was inserted. It's part of a long research program to use betacoronaviruses to present antigens in their spike protein, and if you make the spike similar enough to an HIV-1 antigen, maybe you could confer anti-HIV antibodies to the ACE2 RBD region of an actual HIV virus. Making a gene therapy vaccine for HIV that is long-lasting and preventative could disrupt it's ACE2 binding pattern, and thereby end the transmission of AIDs in human populations. In fact, even people who don't take the prophylactic can benefit, because for a window the cure vector will be transmissible.

Unfortunately, it will probably take many years to figure out how to make it safe enough to apply in general, especially with the worldwide difficulty in getting past prohibitions on human gene therapy trials.
