they had sent in less outdated equipment to afghanistan when they invaded it in the '80's along with a scortched earth tactic that they haven't used here. They used more up to date weaponry in their other balkan engagements over the last decades. If russia is so bad at war then why diid your country spend nearly half a century convincing the world they were the next global bogeyman?
