A father should be the stern, fair, stable, and caring individual that prepares his children for the realities of life. A father will recognize that sometimes, the best thing he can do is let his child fuck up, learn from it, and show them how to correct it themselves to instill self-reliance and indepence. A good father is not a friend to his children, he is the authority and should conduct himself accordingly. A good father is not distant from his children, but very involved in their life.
It's a bitch of balancing act, really. A child should view a father a rock solid support in their life while also wanting to be independent from them as they grow so that they can be a complete person.

Spot on. It is a father's obligation to let a child fuck up EARLY ON in a semi-controlled way, and that is where it can get tricky.
Hover parents that shield their kids are raising the manchildren funkopop collectors, and there are an overwhemlingly large number of bad parents in this regard. I sort of have sympothy for them though, as no one wants to see their child suffer. They are just too myoptic to understand the benefit of that temporary discomfort. They also likely are manchildren themselves.
