The globohomo flag has been flying on the southwest tower of the Berlin Reichstag building, the seat of the German Parliament, since early Saturday morning. Two more were raised in front of the east and west portals of the building. The occasion is the large demonstration, which is also a party, planned in Berlin from noon on the occasion of Christopher Street Day (CSD), to which the organizers expect 500,000 participants. On Friday, the Dyke*March for lesbian visibility already passed through the city.
"The rainbow flag in our parliament - that means a lot to me!", says Bundestag President Bärbel Bas in an official video statement released today by the Bundestag. The same applies to the CSD, to which she feels "closely connected". She has been taking part in the parade in her hometown of Duisburg for years.
Before the flags were displayed for the first time, the Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser (SPD) , gave permission in to hoist the rainbow flag on federal official buildings on certain occasions in the future such as the CSD and the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17th.

In addition the German parliament will for the first time next year commemorate victims of the Nazi regime, who were persecuted and killed for their sexual or gender identity, the Bundestag president said Friday. On January 27, the international Holocaust Remembrance Day, German MPs will put those victims “at the centre of the commemoration ceremony”.
“Sadly there are no survivors left” for the LGBT victims’ memorial, Bas said.
While the former German President Roman Herzog named homosexuals among the victims of the Nazis at the first event in 1996, “these victims have yet to have their own memorial”, said Henny Engels, member of the Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany (LSVD) board.
