The tank is relatively under armored, despite how heavy it is. The lack of ERA on it is frankly inexcusable, but an equally serious issue is how poorly armored the front glacis is - the lower front part of the tank under the turret.
It's an old and outdated tank and the largest benefit it has over russian equivalents comes primarily from the electronics and not storing ammo in the crew compartment. Russian tanks in comparison are lighter, faster, less fuel hungry, easier to maintain, cheaper, more numerous, and better protected to the sides while having nearly equivalent killing power.
The T14's still a wunderwaffe prototype that doesn't effectively exist yet, but the actual design blows all western tanks out of the water. It solves the problem with the ammunition in the crew compartment, modernizes the electronics (past what current western tanks even have - like distributed battlefield networking and drone control) and makes the tank substantially safer for the crew than any other mbt in existence.
I'm really just wondering when or if the US is ever going to build a new tank design. It should've started 10 years ago already.
