What did Russia really invade Ukraine for?

Russia made a bunch of concessions to the west after the fall of the ussr such as giving up East Germany and letting Ukraine control some Russian majority regions. In return the west promised not to push nato eastward. Russia thinks the west keeps breaking that promise by for example placing arms in countries closer and closer to Russia and funding color revolutions in the region. There’s also the issue of Ukrainians supposedly mistreating Russians living in Ukraine but that sounds like a pretext to me, similar to Hitler’s excuse for invading Poland. The final straw for Putin was probably Bidens pullout of Afghanistan which made the Russians badly underestimate the severity of the west’s response to the invasion which they were expecting to be similar to the mild response to Crimea.

They wanted American companies replace Russia as the gas supplier to europe as huge reserves had recently been discovered around crimea and the donbas, but ultimately the main goal was to keep europe under the boot, in particular Germany.

Ukraine has vast amounts of natural gas, as well as some of the most fertile ground in their region. Russia wants to continue their control of gas over Europe, as well as build their ability to bargain abroad with skyrocketing energy demands.

If they didn't move, Ukraine not only could usurp their supply for Europe, but eventually join NATO. It was, I think, viewed as a tactical necessity and something that they would never have the opportunity to plausibly execute again.

That, and they keep saying it was theirs in the first place.
