I had three dogs and zero cats. I've killed cats and maimed dogs (in self defense). I like both, though dogs are vastly preferred. Why would I have a home-bound, toxoplasmosis-carrying, disinterested animal that cuts all of my cables and scratches everything? A (proper) dog is a companion, a guardian, a majestic and strong animal. Plenty of dogs are intelligent and independent, if you train them and let them express themselves. Many owners beat them into a depressed pile of fur, feed them trash and don't walk them enough.
Sure, there are based cats as well, but these are far and few in between. Most of them are boring NPCs.
