Well you have two teams, 4 bases including home plate. Think of batters as offense and the other team as defense. The pticher (standing on the pitching mound) throws the baseball in hopes that the batter will swing and miss, thus resulting in a strike.
The goal of the game is when it's each teams turn to bat, they strike the baseball that the pitcher throws, and round the bases as fast as they can and get back to home plate before being being out. The pitcher and the rest of the team have the job of stopping the batters from scoring. Ways of getting out are
>striking 3 times while batting
>someone on the "defense" side catches the ball before it hits the ground
>someone on the "defense" side touches a base before the batter gets to it
>tagging (touching) the batter out with the ball
Each side has 3 tries to score. When the "defense" get three people out, they switch sides and it's their turn to bat.
There are times when a batter could only make it to one of the 3 bases and the other batters (either batting after him or in front of him on base) get out and he has to switch. You only score when a batter rounds the bases back to home plate. A "Home Run" is when a batter hits the ball so far that it get's knocked out of the field entirely. When this happens the ball is no longer in play and the batter including whoever was on base in front of him can't be tagged out, and all make it back to home plate. A "Grand Slam" is when all 3 bases are occupied, and the current batter hits a Home Run. Thus resulting in 4 points, the maximum you can get in one play.

Forgot to mention a couple of things.
A "Foul" is when a batter hits the ball "out of bounds" the area that dictates this is a cone shape that extends out and gets wider the farther you are away. If a batter hits the ball outside of this cone shape, it's a foul, and the ball is not considered in play. Someone on the "defense" side can still catch a foul ball in the air and get the batter out if they are quick enough. A foul ball is no longer in play when it hits the ground. The number varies, but usually after 4 foul balls the batter is considered out.
If the batter is hit with the ball during a pitch, and the umpire (basically a referee) declares that the pitcher was at fault, the batter is allowed to walk to first base without being tagged out. this is called a "walk"
And finally, batters may often "bunt" the ball. This usually means they hold their bat sideways and instead of swinging it, the let the ball strike the bat on it's own. This is done in an attempt to prevent anyone catching the ball in the air and getting them out.

Baseball is really interesting, I love how it doesn't matter about athleticism per say, you can still be a massive fatso and be an excellent pitcher or catcher. The freakshow part is what got my attention to the game and then after learning all the nuances of the sport I find it very fun to watch a good game.
