I've yet to see Catholics support their stance once you directly quote these things from the bible. They claim they have additional material that supports them, but bible says what they are doing should not be. The best I've seen is them take the single out of context utterance of ON THIS ROCK I SHALL BUILD MY CHURCH and run with it all the way to the hills and back.
I confess my own doctrine is not perfect, but it makes me super suspicious.

I felt it for a long time and wasn't sure what to do about it. Eventually I got the right nudges to just start on my own and some decent introductions on understanding the kind of writing the Bible uses. And things like CS Lewis' writing present the bible and Christian belief in a form that's more tooled to modern minds that have already been 'helped' by our school system and society's fetish for believing the mind's own sense of rationality is perfect and flawless.

What good is attracting people with backwards teachings? All you're doing is drawing people in to false doctrine. Granted, I'm of the opinion Catholicism was never on the up and up anyway. We might be seeing the natural degeneration of an institution that looked at the gospels, sneered, and said they can enhance scripture to be better. You stop using Christ as your authority and naturally anything goes.
