Modern pozzed society is a mixture of these three.

Sister Miriam - A neo-feudal retard who lacks both the technology to resist the worms and the sense to avoid eco-damage. Following Miriam certainly ends in mindworm bakake for all her followers.

Acamedician Zhakarov - Has the technology to fight the flowering, and to avoid eco damage, and decent standards of living. I think Zhakarov would be defeated by the flowering but at least some of his followers would make it off world in new spaceships. Decent faction.

Colonel Santiago - Another liberal, but at least a militant liberal with enough technology and sheer military might to fight the Flowering. They might be the best positioned to actually defeat it.

Dierdre is GOAT though, and makes the worms her pet from day 1. Also has unquestionably the highest living standards of any of the original seven factions. Being a Gaian is smooth sailing from start to finish, and your military is one of the best in the game due to early game psionics. If you had a choice you'd want to be a gaian. Plus all the elf pussy you can handle.

Shout out to Cult of Planet who can survive outside without a space suit and sleep in fungal beds without being attacked by worms; and to the Viking Pirates who are just really cool.

You could say Lal represents doing more of the same and refusing to adapt to a new situation; Morgan represents trying to party like it's 1999 and just accepting that you will die, so living well until the bill comes due. And Yang represents the opposite of extreme austerity to stretch out the amount of time you have alive without having a real plan to avert disaster and in the end dying anyway.

Miriam, it's a miracle she lived as long as she canonically did despite having morals that restricted her from certain useful technologies in the end.

Dierdre is the only one who actually adapts and radically changes her way of life to meet a new environment and a new situation. She represents exploration and, ultimately, teamwork.

Santiago is just a goon with a hammer who sees all her problems as nails. She represents the violence and power of humanity's raw aggression. She also can't take Dierdre or Zhakarov in a fight. Dierdre has psionics and Zhakarov has better guns.

Zhakarov is just a nerd, and probably represents the technological past of humanity, using tools and technology to overcome all its problems in the past, and approaching the new problems of Planet with the same methodical approach.

It's mostly the work of a guy called Brian Reynolds. Buy, yes, he was able to work an unbelievable amount of depth into the game's lore, and seemed to have a real sense of where modern society is going.
