The US is the preeminent military power and the only real super power right now. A hegemony of the likes which have never been seen before. If anything even remotely problematic happens domestically then only the US itself would be able to handle it. Not to mention that the rest of the world would attempt to capitalize on their moments of weakness.

Unless there is some super disparaging power gap between forces then it is likely to happen. Any disadvantageous situation for separatists would be feasible, it would take some super one-sided scenario for them to fail. Right now society is growing less and less cohesive at an exponential rate and much less willing to go to war politically let alone fight in one.

The draft has already been deemed obsolete and volunteer forces are used instead. These volunteers are becoming exceedingly rarer and in poorer quality. If even a quarter of them were to defect it would be a devastating blow. This isn't even counting the National guard or reserves who are much more likely to defect.

Any major upheaval in the US would cause economic crisis not only domestically but around the world. The US also wouldn't be able to wage a real conventional war against its own population. If there is even mild government based defections(especially military) then it is very likely to succeed given they can hold out.
