A drug dealer almost killed his girlfriend when he accidentally blasted her while testing a sawn-off shotgun. The weapon discharged after Jowayne Kesto recklessly hit it with a hammer at his mother's home in Wolverhampton.
The gun was brought to the three-bedroom semi-detached property in Hughes Road in a rucksack by a 17-year-old at around 4pm on April 2 2021. The teenager then took it into the living room and Kesto then asked his girlfriend to fetch him a hammer from upstairs.
When she came back down she found the 21-year-old defendant sitting on the sofa with the shotgun across his lap and described being shocked and frightened on seeing it. Stefan Kolodynski, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said: "He then used the hammer to strike the external hammers of the shotgun which then discharged.
"The complainant was then shot directly in the chest. She collapsed and fell covered in blood." Mr Kolodynski said instead of calling the emergency services Kesto carried the victim outside and leaned her against a van, across the road and a couple of doors down.
