I remember being 21 in college, and realizing that my anarchist beliefs actually pointed more and more to the right than what I had thought.
I think what you are seeing is that a lot of leftists are uncomfortable being called right wing when it for me was associated with Bush or Mitt Romney establishment boomercons.
I also think that a lot of people have the right beliefs but during their growing up because of the constant shifting in what parties say they stand for, you get stuck thinking you're a liberal when your idea of it is freedom and liberty that generally starts from not wanting your life intruded on like smoking weed. Then you grow out of that but also think government should stay out of your life and you don't want to pay for its reckless spending.
