apparently his deal with the NDP for supporting government is close to collapsing. He know that economy will crash even harder this fall and he literally fear the next conservative leader that eill be erlcted September 10 since he is effective and way more popular than Trudeau.
All this could make the other party call a non confidence vote which would collapse the government and force an election this fall which trudeau would 100% certainly lose.
Calling an election now is apparently their last hope to clinging to power. They must do it now before a leader is elected fore the conservative so their opposition is divided during election and he can come out on top

My only thing about OP is I'm not sure the election would happen before the CPC has chosen a leader. I'm not sure what the actual rules are for calling an election while one party has an interim leader.

Well, NORMALLY it's supposed to be a good thing that we get minority governments, with the idea being that they compromise and make deals that the 80% in the center can agree with and leaving the most extreme things off the table. The problem is that governments have been increasingly circumventing normal government processes and just governing via Order In Council and the like (Rough equivalent to American Executive Orders, for the non-leafs in the room). All the recent gun bans were done this way.
Nothing stopping them AFAIK. I don't think that'll be enough to pull a win, though. His name is mud.
