By "Russia", you mean one of the successor states of Kyivan Rus' called Vladimir Suzdal, a vassal state of the Mongol Empire, in which there was a town called Moskva. Rus' itself was founded around 880 AD, and at its height in the 12th century was quite a considerable state, although it fell apart along dynastic lines, as early medieval states often did.

In the wake of the Mongol invasions in the 13th century, the remaining lands of Kievan Rus' were annexed by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was then joined in a dynastic union with the Kingdom of Poland in 1386. Meanwhile, the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, as the lands of Vladimir Suzdal came to be known, finally defeated the Mongols in 1380, and thus began its independent existence. In 1547 Tsar Ivan IV declared the Grand Duchy to be the Tsardom of Russia and named his kingdom "Great Russia", although it did not include any of present-day Belarus or Ukraine.

Following an uprising in 1648, its leader, Bohdan Khmel'nitsky, established the Cossack Hetmanate, essentially modern-day Ukraine, an autonomous state under the protection of the Polish crown. Under the Treaty of Andrusovo in 1667, the Hetmanate was divided along the Dnieper, Poland getting the western part and Muscovy the eastern part.

So 1667 was the first time "Russia" controlled any part of Ukraine, the core of Kievan Rus', which had existed by then for almost 800 years and as part of Lithuania, then Poland-Lithuania, for around 300 years.

Western Ukraine remained with Poland-Lithuania until it was partitioned between Russia and Austria-Hungary in 1772-1793. That remained the state of affairs until WWI, when Austria-Hungary fell apart and the Ukrainian People's Republic was declared following the February Revolution in 1917. It existed as an independent state until 1921, when it was incorporated into the newly-formed Soviet Union as the Ukrainian SSR. It remained so until the USSR dissolved itself in 1991, when it became today's Ukraine.

The connection between Ukraine and Russia is thus tenuous at best. They both evolved from Kyiv Rus', in the same way that Germany and France both evolved from the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by German emperors. By your logic, then, France is rightfully part of Germany, having been occupied by the Franks, a Germanic tribe.

Ukraine is older than Muscovy. The Ukrainian language retains features of Old Slavonic that have been lost in Russian, indicating that it is older than Russian. Muscovy became a land empire by conquering the wild lands of the East. Its addiction to autocracy is a legacy of Mongol rule, and this invasion of Ukraine is pure Mongol barbarism.
