Why did the world used to feel so much more "real" 10+ years ago?

Look back at footage of the early 2010s, the 2000s, the 1990s and beyond, and it feels so much more real, more vibrant, more characterful than the world as we know it today.

I genuinely feel like at some point in the mid-to-late 2010s, something changed in the fabric of the universe, and now we're living in a timeline that just feels... fake. Everything feels like it's not real, like it's some kind of bad parody of real life, rather than reality itself. This also explains why so much insane and nonsensical shit has happened in the past 5 or 6 years. We literally aren't living in the correct timeline, we're in the gay and fucked up one where nothing makes sense anymore.

I'll give you another example that you can use to verify this right here, right now, sitting at your computer. Bring up any Any Forums archive that goes back to 2012 or earlier, hit "oldest posts first" on the search function and read through some threads. On literally any board. And compare the way people used to talk, and the kinds of things they used to talk about back then, to how it is now in the 2020s. They just seemed more real, more human, with a wider range of emotions. Real human beings. Not like today.

Thats because Any Forums got more famous which brought in normalfags, iq 80s, feds and bots.

You didn't spend every waking moment on the internet back then. You spend so much time online now that the internet has become your reality, and your real life a temporary escape.

hyperreality

gpt-3 + dead internet theory. I suspect the majority of post are bots talking to each other unfortunately

Nope. It peaked in the 90s but it was flawed even then. The truth is that this timeline is an abomination. In 98% of the timelines, Hitler and Stalin combined forces and the WORLD SOCIALIST REPUBLIC conquered the world by 2060. This is just the inevitable decay of liberal capitalism. Enjoy.

It was the 2012 CERN time shift

1960*

I'm not talking about just my personal life though, but the very basics of reality.

Don't believe me? Look up videos of the news, of major events, or even just people walking around in 2012. Just 10 years ago. And compare it to 2022. See how much more vibrant things looked and felt back then, how much more engaged people were with the world around them, how much happier everybody seemed, how much more sane every acted. It's genuinely crazy to compare 2012 and 2022 because the two years are so similar in some ways (technology being mostly the same, most people having smartphones, internet, dress and music styles being similar) but the basics of reality in each year are fundamentally different.

You have nostalgia goggles on.

i blame smart phones

shit was better in 2008-2016 after that it felt llke the world took a nosedive

Could be because that was the last time you left the basement. Any Forums isn't the entire world and since 2014 the site has done everything it can to scare off its original userbase and replace them with phoneposting teenagers and old men from facebook.

The early 2010s seem like a golden age compared to today. They weren't even that good, but at least things were happening. There was that EDM scene and even though the music sucked and the people were gay it was more exciting than whatever culture we have now. It was right before #metoo and people were actually open to meeting strangers. I'm Canadian and my best memories were partying it up in Toronto and Montreal. The social divide wasn't there yet and people who are right wing spergs were friends with loony leftists and vice versa. We are now so divided and people live in fear of one another.

I might just have been young then, but it seems like a completely different reality. This board was a quality place as well with legitimate discussion.

The best thing about the late 2010's and early 2020's is unironically watching travel vloggers since the golden age of travel is over.

overconsumption of technology ruined our ability to understand one another and retain a conversation we’ve been zucked into the inner NET

It is objectively true that the world was a better place back then, though:
>things were mostly geopolitically stable
>people still had faith in our institutions and our leaders
>politics were boring but stable
>most people were de-politicised and focused on more lighthearted matters
>people were optimistic about the future and what lied ahead for humanity
>the economy was in a better position, especially in the early 2010s when we were recovering from the recession and had hope
>people were nicer to each other, there was less division
>the worst effects of social media had not yet destroyed society
>society conformed to normal, logical rules and foundations that went back generations
>people had not yet started ripping up the rule books and trying to reinvent everything in the name of "inclusion" and "progress"

These

I think it started when Michael Jackson died

>the world used to feel so much more "real"
This is your life under total communist rule
There is no merit, no predictable way to progress without both being lucky and mindlessly praising The Party
Everything is fake, which is exactly why it feels this way

Human brain has a tendency to look back on the past with nostalgia, the good emotions while ignoring the dreary reality and bad things. Especially if you were young then and your brain was still developing but developed now

But you’ve also described an Adam Curtis documentary

social media apps are psychologically abusing the entire planet. It's a huge problem.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. It was a foggy/sunny evening on my way to the beach and my bro called me to break the news. Michael Jackson unironically red pilled me and sent me down the rabbit hole.

I remember browsing this place in 2012 and remembering it being so much more different: moot was in control, there was a bigger sense of community among users but I had a hard time understanding most of of the discussion back then since it was mostly grown-adult stuff and I was just a kid back then. I was only 16 years old at the time and I felt like didn't belong and I always tried to avoid telling people my real age back then as I used to say that I was 20 years old just to not end up with a ban.

digits confirm

I feel exactly like you do user, but could never really put it into words that well. You worded everything perfectly. I noticed stuff started getting crazy around the mid to late 2010s like you said. And ever since then shuts just gone downhill. I miss the early 2010s and the 2000s and before so much. Shits just been consistently going down hill since the mid 2010s.

I got Any Forums banned at my high school because I would use our computer time to shit post with the old guard Libertarians and actual Neo-Nazis before they left elsewhere.

looks like china already bought that ad space, so no.

The world ended and everything since is a simulation run by the survivors in the future.

i know what you mean. its hard to describe. but things just felt way more real back then, even the "colors" of reality seemed to have different tones to them. people seemed to act warmer and more natural and not as controlling and obnoxious as they do today.

China back then felt harmless desu. It was before Xi, it was when we in the west still viewed China as a country that we were cautiously friendly with. It was before they started veering back into true authoritarianism and communist principles.

Less niggers

It’s unironically because of cell phones and the internet. Yeah those were around in the 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s but they didn’t hold the strong grip on society that they do today. Everything was legit back then. People have real interests, real style, real feelings, and real opinions. Life was more vibrant because people just did what they wanted without feeling the need to take a million pictures or post about it online. Simple things like fashion was so much more vibrant because people were more willing to try new styles. Hell, the only way to get in on a fashion trend was observing other people on the street. Now you just go online and Google “2022 fashion trends” and you’re told exactly how to dress. The internet holds such a grip on people that they’re too scared to try something, do something, watch something, dress a certain way because it’s not what’s being presented on the internet. Everything in social scenes are being broadcasted to everyone, everywhere, at all times of the day. People had to figure things out and find out where they fit in. The internet just tells us now.

Nothing feels real anymore, I thought it was just me. And my life went to shit in 2012 and has stayed shit, the shit just keeps taking on new forms.

you might enjoy this documentary, OP.
central to it is the thesis that we the world we live in now a fiction of itself.

Absolutely agree. We switched timelines at some point in the early 2010s.
>first iphone comes out in 2007
>swine flu 2009
>social media reaches critical mass in around 2009/2010
>occupy wall street in 2011
>kony 2012 (total psyop)
>gamergate in 2014
>trump 2016
>#metoo 2017
>covid, and the vaxx offensive 2020/2021
>muh putin price spike 2022 (nato takeover, one world govt)

Mix in rampant feminism, the whole gender identity shit and BLM and all that shit. If you're wondering, yes, it's always the kikes.
