It's possible to make air conditioning and heating almost free with a heat exchanger and a roll your own quarter mile of buried and insulated fluid-geothermal piping under the lawn.

So what happens is the heat exchanger cools the quarter-mile of fluid under your lawn and spends almost no effort to do that since night-time it's just blowing air on it. Then it's enough during the day to run cold air over the stored coldness or hotness in the pipes into the air inside.

Downside being you've got to roll your own geothermal system and it's not plug and play and if you hire it out it's 20 years up front cost, so again mostly a wash.

PTACs are like $2k and are perfect for zoning like small apartments/condos or hard to duct to areas (bedrooms above garages and shit). Most these days are high efficiency heat pumps which means the thermal expansion valve is reversible, allowing it to produce heat instead of cool. Just don't run them below freezing temps.

I never drop under 15 without heating. Lowest i saw was about 12 and i was traveling for 2 weeks mid winter.

I don't need one, ricecel. Temps don't go above 30 more than 2-3 days a year here. Mostly it's 17-22 degrees C during summer (day time) and 12-15 C at night. I might as well buy a fucking snowmobile instead, cause there's snow 2-3 days a year here too. You're not first world unless you own a snowmobile, or something.

If it's deep and big enough you don't need to cool the ground at night. If it's shallow, the pipes will break in the winter if you don't drain it, and then your can't use it for heating.
