What people think will happen: China will charge more and things will move on.

What will really happen: China will eventually ban or heavily restrict microplastics because they cause infertility. So will any country with a military capable of interdicting ships, which is most. Trash will be sent to the coast of failed states namely Oman, Yemen and Somalia where it will destroy local fisheries and destroy local fertility too. This will precipitate a larger crisis as power shifts and these countries descend into chaos as society collapses. Eventually, the amount of microplastics in the water will be so high it will spread worldwide and begin destroying most marine life. The UN will then forcibly stop it, and so cities will be forced to burn trash within incinerators again. But this won't work because it'll just put the microplastics in the air, causing intense smog or otherwise consuming a lot of electrical power to safely refine into plastic sludge blocks. These blocks will then be with us for the rest of our lives and for the rest of humanity's existence. Over the next century plants, fungi and bacteria then marine life and mammals will adapt to consume it. When the microplastics pollution inevitably reduces, this will kill most non-human life.
