The govt doesn't own all our industry but they tell an industry to jump and they ask how high. With govt contracts being many businesses biggest income that come with plenty of stipulations. They never had to openly take them over all they had to do was give them enough money and it was all bought. Even if you directly dont work for the govt, more than likely some of your clients or business partners will be. If they want to take control of an industry its as easy as threatening contracts and either getting what they want or bankrupting you and helping your rival take over.

His accurate description of the methods was tolerable as long as he was helping the narrative of USA vs Russia. Once that narrative became obviously wrong, he likely found a way to make the fragments of it that he knew to be true fit in to the bigger picture, and then he was killed.
