It turned out the Ukrainian military had a bit more to them than in 2014 and managed to put up an actual defense, which forced Russia to treat it like a real war. While logistics was a big problem for the Russians in the beginning of the war, it was only a partial factor for why they withdrew. The bigger, underlying issue was that amusingly enough, Russia didn't have enough manpower. Russia only invaded with about 200k men, about a quarter to a third of which actually went to the north. Kiev has a population of about 3 million, and trying to take that with a battlegroup of less than 70k is suicide, even for the Russians. Once it became apparent that Ukraine wasn't going to fold like a piece of wet paper and their march got bogged down in fighting, they had to withdraw or face destruction spreading themselves too thin to try and hold quickly won territory. So, they did the smart thing and withdrew to take important territory instead.

It's easy to buy when you consider the fact that only 200,000 Russian troops (mainly guards) are engaged in Ukraine. There's also a limited naval presence carried out by black sea fleet and the airforce is only used for ground support and little else.
Russia has 2 million trained troops, thousands of aircraft including over 1,500 air superiority and over 300 ships, but only 50 in black sea.
Ukraine has no airforce Russia needs to worry about, so this limited war is working out well enough for the capture of donbass.

The worst part about all of this is the sanctions though. Because here is the situation. If the U.S wanted to push Russia all the way out of Ukraine they could. They could deliver enough HIMARS with enough long range rockets, longer than 80 km, to completely push Russia out of Ukraine. So why don´t they? Well Biden is an old scared senile coward who is afraid that if Putin loses to much face in such a defeat, he will respond with tactical nuclear weapons. Ok, but what does that have to do with the sanctions? Well it makes the sanctions completely pointless, the U.S have already won on the battlefield, but refuses to provide Ukraine the means to the final deathblow, so there is no need to have sanctions against Russia. Even if all sanctions were dropped, even if the EU paid for gas in rubles etc. and if all of that meant that Russia could send more material and men to Ukraine it doesn´t matter. Because the U.S would just deliver a bit more HIMARS, a bit more rockets, a bit more intel and satelite images of where the russian artillery shells are stored and the current situation would still be the same. Except Europe wouldn´t be destroying their own economies.

No. MLRS systems are important, and the US guidance systems are good, but they are not a silver bullet. And it's not as if Ukraine didn't have comparable systems before HIMARS, the BM-30 is certainly comparable, and Ukraine operate(d/s) 80 pieces. What Ukraine is missing is ammunition for their heavier guns, and the US already sent about a third of our stockpile of ammunition to them.
The thing about the NATO weapons being sent to Ukraine people need to understand is that

We don't produce enough ammo for them to supply Ukraine even if we did.
NATO practically abandoned artillery for air power, and it shows in this conflict. And we can't and shouldn't donate air frames, as it takes a western sized economy, training, and supply lines for them to usefully participate in the conflict. Given Russia's propensity for launching Kalibrs at anything that looks like a potential threat, they would need to be trained in NATO territory, which is an unacceptable escalation of the war.
