I've been struggling to come to terms with it too. I had a non engineering job out of college but having that as my work experience has basically blacklisted me from engineering jobs because they either want greenhorns or people trained directly in engineering. Start in one career and you're locked in for life and I went into a really shitty one that I really don't want to go back to. I had a meltdown over it in the car the other week. No i mean VBA in excel and access. Automating tedious work. Manipulating, moving and using information from MRP system for industrial equipment manufacturing company. Not only did i organize the work in digital format (used to be entered and calculated manually)... but i went a step further and automated it with VBA so any retard can simply press the buttons i make in excel sheets and carry out intricate and tedious tasks in seconds. Skills crossed over into accounting and inventory. I have basically made these tasks doable by people that would otherwise be incapable of doing them.
