I reckon it's this: the Vietnam war was actually about Russian trade routes, America was losing, and made a deal to stop the space program and let Russia have the space rockets.

Because the USAs attempts to make rockets had repeatedly failed, even when they had access to all the documentation and protoypes seized from Germany. They HAD to convince Braun and his peers to develop rockets for them.
They agreed on the condition they get to do their space exploration thing.
And so you have NASA.

But once the USA had ICBMs and had some US citizens who understood rocket science enough to make something that wouldn't explode immediately after launch, they had no more need for Von Braun or the others.
So Von Braun and his buddies got denounced as communists and either executed, imprisoned or placed under house arrest until they died.

Ultimately all the USA ever wanted was ICBMs. Once they had them any further space exploration or rocket development was pointless.

Good thing Spacex is actually putting in some work and the US is no longer completely dependent on the government for space travel.

It's essentially bringing in a revolving door of NASA interns that stole design documents NASA drew up years or even decades ago.
Lot of it was stuff NASA even got to test and prove but never got to take beyond experimental prototyping because congress would ask "Yes but how does this help us push homosexuality on the middle east?/import more spics?"
