Why religion is illogical

A god is, as most would define one, a supernatural entity that is beyond human understanding. This definition is already problematic, because you admit you believe in something you can't even explain. How can you say something exists when you don't know what it is?

A more nuanced definition would be that we can't understand a god fully, but that the god has recognizable characteristics. These characteristics can be positive (what the god is) or negative (what the god isn't). Defining a god by negative qualities like ineffable or infinite runs us into another dead-end, because in order to say what a god is not, you have to have an idea of what a god is. If you use positive qualities like wise or powerful, you reduce the god to a natural level that is within human understanding.

The last trick is to describe the god with infinite positive qualities--omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnipotent. This way, we get an idea of what the god is while keeping it in supernatural territory. But not only are these characteristics contradictory (a being can't both know the future and be able to change the future), but how a being can be omniscient, omnibenevolent, or omnipotent isn't ever explained. How can a being possibly know everything there was, is, or ever will be? If you say that his methods lie beyond human understanding, then we circle back to the first problem where you believe in something you don't at all understand.

Fucking pervert

Although to be fair, I actually think Jesus is cool because I read the bible and it turned out Jesus was a communist. The main problem, as I see it now, is that almost none of the stupid hillbilly rightwingers you encounter have ever read the bible

religion was debased by the avarice and lewdness of its priests: till the temples
became a den of thieves: till prostitution sat enthroned upon the altars of God

Thats alot of fancy words for saying that you don't want to FEAR GOD and KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS

Faith defies the physical. The sooner you understand that, the sooner you can escape your deterministic programming. It’s clear from your memeflag that you have adopted leftist tenets as your religion.

>the guy saying that we should only care about the spiritual word and should disregard politics since it doesn't actually matter is a historical materialist
I hate am*ricans

That's not what he said. He said pay your taxes, pay the workers equally and don't be rich or you'll never get to heaven. Later in the bible it calls for wealth redistribution from the rich to the poor

God is creator of the universe and Christ is king.

>Faith defies the physical.
This has nothing to do with the physical, it's just deduction. Whatever the god you believe in is, it's either natural or it's inexplicable. In the latter case, why do you believe in its existence and not in the existence of thousands of other gods humans have come up with?

Are modern christians the new fedoras?

You fail from the start because you don't know what God is supposed to be. God is not a thing, another entity, but more powerful. God is the uncaused cause of existence itself. Classical Theism, which is as old as Greek philosophy, was always the official way of believing in God adopted by Christians until Protestants came about.
Unless you are willing to understand what is is, of course you will continue to find religion stupid.
God is the source of reality itself. In a sense, ad Dionysius the Areopagite wrote, God does not even exist because it is beyond existence in itself. If God was existent, the property of existence would be bestowed on Him, and he would not be God. God on the other hand impart existence as such, as everything is nested in him.
Your problem is that you conceive God as another creature, albeit more powerful that we are, basically a god or angel or demon.

That's actually a very Jewish reply

>don't be rich or you'll never get to heaven
Luke 18:27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

not forcefully

what if the gods can't see us either?

"religion" is a mental illness. Christ came to destroy religion and he did just that. The Orthodox Church is a spiritual hospital. Orthodoxy is the Kingdom; your inheritance.

>God is the uncaused cause of existence itself.
Special pleading. You're running with the assumption that self-causation is impossible. Clearly it's not--you literally say that God has no cause. By your own logic, why couldn't the universe have caused itself, then? If you say "God works in ways beyond even the universe" we're back at square one where you don't know what you even believe.
>God is the source of reality itself.
How can God create reality? An omnipotent being would need some unknowable power to do anything he wants, but this power doesn't employ means, doesn't act, and has no purpose. You're excluding God from causality. Somehow, God brings about effects without resorting to causal processes. Whatever He wills, it happens--and the logistics are beyond the scope of human comprehension. To accept such a being, we accept effects without causes and consequences without means. How is that possible? No matter how you try to spin it, we always return to "God works in mysterious ways" which is problematic because we lose the ability to define what a god IS. And that's exactly why religion is illogical.

>. In the latter case, why do you believe in its existence and not in the existence of thousands of other gods humans have come up with?
Who says they don't? I myself believe the other "gods" existed but are the fallen angels or other types of entities, still less powerful than God and Jesus
