Because they treat Christianity like a social club for acceptance rather than actially following its laws and attempting to live life righteously as per God's demands. They can call themselves Christians all they want, but their joy in diving headfirst into sin with not even the slightest attempt to resist will put them on a first class trip to Hell. Actually, it is. He's right. You simply have the wrong idea about sin. It a a list of bad things you can do although that's part of it, it's imperfection cast by the fall. Childbirth is sinful now because it's imperfect, cursed and painful. Gathering food is sinful because it requires painful toil, the ground was cursed by God and requires killing and spilling blood if you eat meat. Sin is not "Billy did a bad thing", sin is understanding your difference from God. You cannot emulate his goodness. Everything we do is tainted.
