Because they had already invaded in 2014 and got themselves into a proxy war using non-uniformed regular soldiers and donbabweans to fight Ukrainian govt forces for 8 years. sanctions + the saudis tanking the cost of oil pretty much crippled russia. So you get Russia dicking around for 8 years in the donbas fighting at a disadvantage trying to maintain plausible deniability against regular forces trained and supplied by NATO, DPRniggers losing ground, and Medvedchuck getting arrested last year, Russia had no means of influencing Ukraine without a straight up military invasion and it's obvious they were banking on a different response from a different guy in office

Because invading was a last ditch effort for Russia. Russia always wanted to reintegrate Ukraine peacefully like Belarus. Otherwise they'd attack already in 2014, when Ukraine had power vacuum and pathetic army.
Trump was ready to negotiate and strike some kind of a deal on Ukraine. Remember Helsinki? And he literally stated it openly after the beginning of the war, that it wouldn't happen if he was the president, they'd reach some kind of an agreement peacefully. But democrats simply can't afford to lose Ukraine, too much dirt. So they undermined Trump on every turn, and then just couped him altogether.
