Men don't care about women's issues. Men's only interest in women's issues is to derail the conversation, make it about themselves and perceive any discussion of male violence as a personal attack. Being concerned with women's issues and safety contradicts what they believe is their fundamental identity as a man. Any man can call himself a 'feminist' but immediately code-switch in the boys toilets, talk selaciously about women and turn a blind eye to their friends harassment. One guy I knew was the nicest, friendliest, most innocent guy. It didn't stop him from committing sexual assault.
Men's dominance of the conversation means women can't even voice their own traumas and injustices without being talked over or portrayed as 'bitchy' or a 'whiny feminazi' or a 'sjw'. Men never listen. Men never change their behaviour. They only talk about themselves. Women always have to appeal to men's sensibilities, constantly afraid of men lashing out. Women always have to say 'not all men' before men calm down and decide to listen to their traumas. It is the responsibility of women to carefully and oh so delicately question men's behaviour, rather than the responsibility of men themselves.
Half the women I know are stuck in abusive relationships. This is an epidemic. But I don't see any positive change happening. The worst part of all this is how much sexism I've internalised myself. I can't even validate my own feelings without voices telling me that I'm just a whiny stupid woman and how I should consider what men might feel for daring to mention women's issues. I'm trying to pretend that everything's fine but I feel like I'm sinking further and further into a dark, miserable puddle where there is no escape and no-one can hear me.
