Polls and maps are something you can never trust. Ever. I say that as someone that has been a cartographer my whole career and the one thing I've learned for sure is I can make anything look like reality by altering geospatial data to support my argument, whatever that argument is. Same thing with polls but it's even worse, i.e. Only poll certain areas, demographics, etc.

the polls mostly aren't fake, just done extremely badly. bad questions, poor statistical cross-sections, yadda, yadda... if you poll people on two potential candidates, the one with name recognition has an outsized advantage. if you poll based on a generic ballot (the dem vs the repub) you get a more realistic answer, but that misses out on the personality factor.
Nobody wants Biden but nobody wants Republicans to win either.

Most pollsters consistently oversample Democrats, so when they show good prospects for Democrats they're probably not so great in reality, and when they show bad prospects it's probably really, really bad for them.
