TAKE THAT PUTLER!!! The leader of the SPD speaks out: Saskia Esken has clearly rejected demands from the Union and the FDP to extend the operating times of the last three nuclear power plants in Germany because of impending gas bottlenecks.
This is "completely nonsensical" from an energy, economic and security policy perspective, Esken told the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" on Wednesday. The nuclear power plants supplied electricity and no heat. In order to replace gas-fired power plants in power generation, there are "more flexible and safer alternatives".
The last three existing nuclear power plants covered just five percent of electricity production and thus made no countable contribution to the current crisis, said Esken. "Nuclear power is uneconomical, highly dangerous and has no future."
As part of the nuclear phase-out decided after the reactor catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan, the last three German nuclear power plants are to be taken off the grid by the end of the year. The Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 piles are currently still supplying electricity. Habeck and Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (also Green) had already advised against longer maturities in a review in March.
A small contribution to energy supply would be opposed to major economic, legal and security risks. An extension of the running times would not bring any additional amounts of electricity in the coming winter, but at the earliest in autumn 2023 after refilling with new fuel rods.

the truth is: they can't let them run longer, not even if the wanted to. This was already discussed half a year ago. A nuclear powerplant just can't simply be turned ON again. They have no staff, fuel rods, etc. They prepared this shutdown for years.

We have successful examples of extending RBMK runtimes from 30 to 45 years here, but it required a lot of planning in advance, additional safety measures, upgrades etc. Point is, it isn't fast and Germans are probably fucked.
