If escalation, it would no longer be proxy war between NATO and Russia in Ukraine. U.S. has many military bases throughout Europe if any of these were attacked, the stakes would get high real fast. Tanks have done their job since their inception, which was the overcoming of trench based defenses. No trench system can hold back a concentrated tank assault.
Now, they have been trying to find other roles for them since then. Sometimes they work; sometimes they don't.
Modern tactics for tanks would be best described as antiquated. The entire doctrine needs to be reexamined and the dross thrown out.

Less than 10% of encounters is tanks vs tanks, usually it's just HE slinging at enemy's fortifications.
There were lots of vids of building shelling in Mariupol but I've only seen one video of hohol tank vs russkie tank.
