Should’ve paid attention in 6th grade physical science class during the lesson about maps.
Maps are 2D representations of a 3D shape, in this case, a globe (flat earthers seethe) aka a sphere. Have you ever tried to pop a basketball or soccer ball mall and lay it flat? Not exactly easy without stretching or cutting it in a strange way. It’s not a cylinder (a rectangle with two circles on each end) which can lay flat—therefore when you try to flatten a sphere to make a map, it becomes distorted.
