We know the universe is expanding, and usable (kinetic/potential) energy is being converted into heat. This means there is a finite amount of usable energy in the universe, so the universe is not infinite in time. Eventually the energy will run out, which means it also began moving towards zero at some point, i.e. the 'big bang'

So, in order for energy to suddenly begin running out (the start of time) something had to cause that to occur. Something that is outside of time, eternal, something that is more powerful than the sum total of everything in the universe, which would be indistinguishable from omnipotence, and something that is completely self-sustained, as it existed 'before' the universe.

What's something eternal, omnipotent and self-sustaining? In a word, God.
