Nations don’t do things because it’s justified or morally righteous. They do things to protect the material interests of its ruling classes. In the case of Russia, after the 1999 crash and default, followed by the bombing and defeat of their historic allies in Yugoslavia, they recognized that they weren’t being allowed into the club as a equal, so they decided to pursue an independent path, and with stagnation and declining growth they felt compelled towards expansion. The wests response of course only heightened the tensions and with Nordstream 2 being blocked, they felt their time to act was now or never.
