In America you always give way to the left (the right in Britain), but assholes wont make a gap for you sometimes. In those instances it's up to the motorcyclist to forward plan quite a few seconds ahead with reasonable accuracy, this isn't easy for a novice driver to achieve. If something goes wrong you could cause vehicles in the lane you entered to brake harshly, which means the motorcyclist did something wrong. This might seem small but it can have a huge knock on effect on the traffic behind you, causing traffic jams, increasing the likely hood of accidents and thats if the other driver sees you and reacts, if he doesn't it could cause something must worse.
