Wind turbines receive subsidies for availability, that means they make money even if the wind is not blowing. Most power markets have day ahead scheduling and real time LMP (Locational Marginal Prices). Wind turbines can not be scheduled and are payed for what they produce. At times of overgeneration or electrical transmission congestion, real time prices will decline until the desired effect is realized. Wind turbines are terrible in these situations because they will continue to run even in the face of NEGATIVE prices, doesn't matter because of subsidies are there to pay them for availability. Coal and gas get crushed in this type of environment.
