Why do a lot of Marxists seem to rely heavily on straw-man arguments in order to make a point? For example, they will often claim that ‘Fascism is Capitalism in decline’, even though Fascism/National Socialism rejects both ideologies for their emphasis on materialism and fought against both Liberal Capitalism and Marxist Socialism during WW2.

There are different kinds of socialists. The idea of pro-worker anti-capitalism predated marx, and as a general sentiment is attractive to a wide variety of people suffering under capitalism. As such many members of the broader socialist movement are simply operating on vague sentiments. Socialism to marxists however is just one step of the progression of history, and pro-worker is a stance based on the model of social evolution developed by marx and engels. Marxists then are socialists because 'now is the time to further socialism' not because marxists are ideologically socialist the way liberals are ideologically capitalist.
There is always a tendency for some caught up in broader socialist movement to, disheartened by lack of progress, to join other elements which pay lip service to worker interest. These socialists have lost sight of the big picture, and are tempted by shortcuts. The comintern warned against the rise of fascism long before it became an apparent problem, because the underlying social productive dynamics it preserved were incorrect. The socialists that became nazis were lured in by the promises of what would be accomplished while neglecting to check if the structure proposed was capable of it.

On reatrdera they used a star wars analogy and said the dark side is a corruption of the force and the light side it’s natural state. That there is no balance between them, the dark side must be destroyed. And they think that they are like the light side. I used to be a SW fan and apparently this really is canon which sounds absurd but whatever I don’t care. Point is they think they have the moral high ground and are on the right side of history and everybody who disagrees is evil that must be destroyed and cannot be reasoned with. In truth this is a classic Marxist way of thinking. Lenin and Trotsky refused to entertain any opposing opinions to their ideology. It is a mentality we should probably adopt.
