The word "kike" is short for "kikel" which means "circle".
When people were coming into the US through Ellis Island over the past centuries many of them were illiterate and unable to write their own names. Those who could not sign their name were allowed to sign with an "X".
Jewish people have a problem with writing anything that looks like a cross so they signed with a circle instead. They revealed themselves as being Jewish when they signed with a circle and the workers would refer to them as "kikels".
