I am an Emmett Till case revisionist. My conclusion is that the dudes who killed him essentially did nothing wrong. Till's father (Louis Till) was literally executed by the US military for raping and murdering Italian women during WWII. Little Emmett was already the fruit of a rotten tree. While not dispositive with respect to any particular future events, it can become strong suggestive evidence in context.
The circumstances of Emmett suddenly showing up in Mississippi are also unclear. He wasn't just 'visiting cousins,' since his mom did not accompany him, nor did any other relatives. Instead, it seems that he had gotten into trouble in Chicago, and was sent south to hang out for a while until things calmed down. The nature of the trouble is unclear, but probably rather serious, since they shuffled him down to Mississippi in a hurry.
The town where he arrived was around 40% black, so it's not as though blacks were a new thing to the local whites. It is known that Till was acting cocky, bragging about his supposed activities back in Chicago. His interaction with the white lady clerk was probably fairly rapey.
In a small town with its own codes of racial accommodation, this kind of flagrant disrespect of boundaries has to be punished. Which is what initially happened. Evidence suggests that the men who came after Till started by demanding an apology.
Instead of rendering the apology and defusing the crisis, Till behaved with unwarranted cocky arrogance. He may have tried to attack the men, and got fucking wrecked. A subversive outsider who refused to adapt to local norms was swiftly purged from the community. Till was uppity and was sexually harassing white women AND he refused to submit to the community's norms AFTER he got caught.
The main mistake was leaving his corpse to be found, rather than weighing him down and giving him to the gators.
