Half-staff used to be reserved for the deaths of important political figures, former or active Presidents, Vice-Presidents, SCOTUS Justices and Speakers of the House, President Pro-Temps of the Senate and cabinet Secretaries and former Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now they lower it to half mast for almost any tragedy or disaster involving death - mass shootings (but not gang related ones), tornados, hurricanes, car pile ups, bridge collapses, aircraft crashes etc. More often than not it's at half staff now and most of the time I haven't a clue what for. Even Abe is going to get a half mast day here in the US although he has no connection at all to the US.

I know I fucking hate it. The flag being at half staff used to be something everyone would notice and talk about the reason behind it. Now no one cares because it's every day and has lost all meaning. We badly need a ministry of culture to stop shit like this.
