House prices are so expensive because half your peers are receiving tax free early inheritance from their parents. They already have half the price of a current house in their bank account.
Their parents were raised in a culture of not spending money and saving as much as they can. Avoiding paying tax on it. They never had a plan on what to do after. Now they have 2 or 3 kids and they are old boomers with no desire to do anything. They continue this aimless plan of saving money and avoiding tax so they will just hand the money to their children.
Why do you think that middle class locations in proximity to jobs, hospitals, universities etc are priced so ridiculously? About half of your peers can afford it because they got the money. If you are a couple with a middle class income and no inheritance you should probably give up on home ownership near the city.

I'm for people keeping what their parents have accumulated but I also recognise that the reason house prices are high is that so many people have lots of money from their parents. This does not seem to be talked about much in media. Perhaps people witb no inhesitance should just accept commuting of seeking a job that is outside of the centre of the city they live near.
