Capitalism is not an ideology or a form of government. Capitalism is a set of economic relations between producers, consumers, and owners. It “works” because it exists and perpetuates itself, it is the most productive system of economic organization so far.
Despite working, capitalism has been incredibly destructive and humanity likely will never recover from its worst cultural and social effects. Most people can’t apprehend this, they talk about irrelevant shit like wealth inequality when they criticize capitalism, or yell about how great it is at producing more tvs and widgets when supporting it.

It's really the world of finance. The whole "evil corporations" rhetoric of 70s liberals and onward was a distraction from the world of finance, which is the true source of most of these problems. Of course there are other factors too, but I felt a need to mention this.
